In Desperate Need of a Fix…

July 14, 2010

Missing the bus really put a kink in my day. Starting your day by running to catch a ride that isn’t even there is not exactly my definition of fun. So, I had to call in late for the first time. What’s worse is, I didn’t have time to get any coffee. As I’ve stated in previous blogs, this is bad. Very bad. So, I think I’ve started a pretty bad habit at a pretty young age. I don’t know why I need the caffeine fix in the AM, but I definitely do. Maybe it’s my Dad’s genes, he drinks coffee pretty much like a fiend. (Sorry Dad it’s true.) Then again, my mother can’t go without her own daily fix from a diet coke…hmm…well both sides of the coin say I’m a java nut!

Alas, I finally found a coffee place near a sight we were filming, after quite literally almost dozing off in the news van. We were at a pub on Capitol Hill (I will elaborate more about that in a moment) when I saw the cutest little coffee shop called Victrola Coffee Roasters. The place had a glass wall separating the coffee shop from where the roasters were sifting through bags of coffee beans. My barista ground the beans right in front of me and then used a French press to finish my brew…it was delicious….and cheaper than Starbucks!

Starbucks is the Wal-Mart of coffeehouses; there are so many more unique, family owned places that you wish you’d support but somehow you always find yourself back at Starbucks because of convenience and trust. Though, I have to give it to them, Starbucks (unlike Wal-Mart) never sacrifices quality in any of their stores. I can truly say I’ve never been in a gross, outdated, or tacky Starbucks. Ha..wish I could say any of those things for Wally world! Plus, let’s face it, you just can’t beat a good Skinny (skim milk) extra pump Cinnamon Dolce Latte, even it is 5 bucks. (Yeah, I sort of throw my calorie counting out the window with that nonfat milk but extra syrup contradiction-but whole milk is just gross whether you’re trying to lose weight or not..ick..)

But, I digress. The reason I stumbled upon this lovely little shop in the first place is because we were filming at the Six Arms pub next door. The Mcmenneman brothers, two entrepreneurs and apparent siblings, own several pubs (including the Six Arms), spas, and hotels throughout Washington and Oregon. We were covering the newest addition to their empire, which is going to be in a former grade school in Bothell, a town just north of the U-district. They are going to completely remodel it into a folksy, swanky hotel with a bar, movie theater, and garden. It’s very cool. But, we wanted to film some of the other places they own so people would immediately recognize their style and be interested. The Six Arms pub was amazing! It was designed so brilliantly, I couldn’t stop taking photos. I could totally imagine hanging out or having lunch there. It was the most relaxing, and folksy trendy place, perfect for Capitol Hill.

I write many of my thoughts down throughout the day that I think should make it into my blog so I don’t forget them. I usually end up finding a spot near the van somewhere and plopping down for a while to write. I got lucky today because we just happened to be filming the live shot at the abandoned school. :) There was a great shady tree in the front schoolyard and I sat in the cool grass underneath it contently writing for over an hour. I had to stop writing about this pub and my day after a while so I could write my stand up. It was sort of disappointing..don’t get me wrong, I like writing for broadcast but not when it pulls me away from the whimsy of my blog writing, which is a lot more fun. Maybe I’ll have to be an author someday, too. Yeah, well, add it to the list.

Until tomorrow…

  2. I know that I don't have to tell you how impressed I am with your writing, your presence on camera, and everything else you've been doing. I look forward to reading your blog every day...it is awesome...and I can't wait to see all of the standups you've been recording.

As for your caffeine addiction...very bad! It is very hard to quit...I've tried, but as you know I haven't been successful.

Oh, btw, I LOVE your quote for the day! :-)
